JR Strickland is a writer director editor and visual effects artist. He has been making videos and editing since he was 6-years-old. He is currently the owner of The Nocturnal Operations Company and Nocturnal FX.
Raised in Bolingbook, IL, Strickland graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a BA in Film and Video and a concentration in directing (’08).
After moving to Los Angeles, Strickland broke into the entertainment as a personal assistant for music producer Kosine of Da Internz. There, he worked multiple artist including Jaime Foxx, Big Sean, and Nicki Minaj. His session with Nicki included assisting on the record ‘Anaconda’.
Strickland transitioned into the music video world by joining Riveting Entertainment. There he rose the ranks from assistant editor, to editor and VFX Supervisor. After leaving Riveting, Strickland started the VFX company, Nocturnal FX, and production/post-production company, The Nocturnal Operations Company. In it’s first year, Nocturnal FX, helped two music videos win an MTV VMA, (Logic ft Alessia Cara and Khalid “1-800” and Big Sean ft Jeremih “Light”).
Strickland visual effects and/or editing work also include projects for Ariana Grande, Bon Jovi, Cardi B. Roc Nation, and Jordan Brand.
Strickland’s love for directing never went away. Using the experienced gained from working on the many projects over the years, as well as the friendships with extremely talented filmmakers Strickland has begun bringing the works he’s written to light.
His directorial catalogue also includes an award at SXSW for best commercial co-signed by Titanic and Avatar producer Jon Landau. ‘A-Minor’ is his short film debut.
